To stave off potential incorrect placements, it is sometimes helpful to relay messages to the designer during the Modeling session. The easiest way to accomplish this is by adding the message to component data and including this data field in the modeling session via the Specification Selection Dialog. This article provides steps to accomplish this. In this case, I have elected to instruct my designers to only use Raised Face Flanged elbows in HP Service. 1. Adding a Design Message to Component Data A brief message can easily be added to the catalog record in either an out of the box blank field (i.e. Alt_P_Mark, User 1, User 2, User3) or a user created field. I have selected to add my message to the Alt_P_Mark field. Once inside the Specification Generator's Catalog Editor for the correct Catalog, I use the Filter Builder to isolate the records for Raised Face Flanged Elbows by filtering for the facing ‘RF' and the End Condition ‘FL'. With the filter applied and the records isolated, I can now add my message to the Alt_P_Mark field as I had selected. I can now exit the Catalog. I open my Spec. After checking the constraints to ensure my components are included, I build the Spec Changes to rebuild the tables with the new data. 2. Adding the edited field to the Specification Selection Dialog The fields displayed in the Specification Selection Dialog are stored in the file Speckey.ini and are specific to each class. The steps below indicate how to make the change for the elbows selected above. First, locate the Speckey.ini in the following location: C:\Program Files\Bentley\Plant XM\Modules\Base Open the file in a text editor an find the class of the edited components. Under the class name you should see the Display Fields section, this controls the fields displayed in the Specification Selection Dialog for the given class, in this case we will add Alt_P_Mark to the list.
