If I get the point, the task is to use generic components during design and then replace them with specific ones. AutoPlant designe workflow is specification based so there is no way to use components that are not defined in specifications. There is a way to change specification using Change Size/Change Spec utility but it rather this tool could be used on small scale as it requires constant user participation during replacement process. Go to Piping Tools ChangeSize/Change Spec and hit Help button to get some more info about this tool. I hope this will help.
